CBS Identifies The Loyal Opposition: Eric Cantor

without comments

CBS’ iconic program Sunday Morning will air a profile of GOP Whip Eric Cantor this weekend:

Democrats in Washington call him “Dr. No.” Republicans hail him as an up-and-coming new face in the GOP leadership. He is Rep. Eric Cantor, the 5th-term Congressman from Richmond, Virginia – the Republican Whip in the House of Representatives. At press conferences, on cable interview programs or on the Sunday talk shows, Cantor is everywhere. His message: President Obama’s economic policies are short-sighted, too expensive, and give Washington too much power. He is known to get under the President’s skin, and even Democrats acknowledge he’s a smart and worthy opponent. And he has another distinction: he is the only Jewish Republican in the House of Representatives.

Tune in. Now that the Tax Day is over – we have to think about What – and who – is next.

Tennessee GOP on the Mortgage Bailout

without comments

Some things are funny.  This is one of them.  I know some will disagree with the sentiment, and I appreciate their point of view.  But ya know, after eight years of sniping at former President George W. Bush – it’s time to remind folks that what is good for the goose is good for the gander.  When I disagreed with him, I did so publicly.  I’ve made no secret of my contempt for the corruption on both sides of the aisle.

And, because I vehemently disagree with the stimulus and the omnibus bill and the outrageous spending of the people’s money…. I am going to vent and let off a little steam:

Democrats Disenfranchise Tennessee Voters

with one comment

Those who remember almost any recent election will likely stop to read that headline again. After all, isn’t it the Democrats who have been making the claim every other year that their voters have been disenfranchised? Isn’t it the other guys that do that sort of thing? The answers are yes and no. ‘Yes’, it’s the Democrats that claim it but, ‘No’, it’s not the other guys that do it. Hypocritically, it is Democrats that claim it and the Democrats that do it. One need look no further than Tennessee SJR 127 for proof.

In 2000, the Tennessee Supreme Court ruled that common sense legislation pertaining to abortion in Tennessee be struck down. Things like a 48 hour waiting period and full disclosure of the impact of having an abortion to any woman seeking one were thrown out. It is vital to note that none of this legislation prevented, in any way, a woman’s access to abortion. Just the opposite. How is it possible that more information and consideration of such a decision would be bad for a woman considering such a medical procedure? The Court, as courts often do, ruled otherwise. Once again, a small group of appointed individuals, set aside the will of the people as expressed through their duly elected representatives.

Since 2004, SJR 127 has been introduced into the Tennessee Senate and passed by a wide majority each time. Each time it has gone to the Tennessee House where it has died in Committee, the Public Health and Family Assistance Subcommittee of Health and Human Resources Committee to be precise. It was the same earlier this year. On a party line vote, the Subcommittee refused to allow SJR 127 to come out of committee to the full House where it would pass and then be put on the ballot in 2010 for all Tennesseans to vote on. Six committee members, all Democrats, are preventing six million Tennesseans from having their say. Talk about disenfranchising voters!

The resolution these six anti-democracy Democrats are keeping from appearing on the ballot is as follows:

Nothing in this Constitution secures or protects a right to abortion or requires the funding of an abortion. The people retain the right through their elected state representatives and state senators to enact, amend, or repeal statutes regarding abortion, including circumstances of pregnancy resulting from rape or incest or when necessary to save the life of the mother.

That’s it. It’s a simple, factual declaration the truth. There is no language in the Tennessee Constitution that secures the right to an abortion or funding for the same. Instead, it is up to the people of the state of Tennessee to decide!. Who could be against that? In 2008, in the United States of America, who could oppose letting the people vote on such an important issue and have a say in the way things are done in their state?

Who, indeed? It is the Democrats who oppose such a thing! It is the Democrats who insist the people be forbidden from voting on the matter! It is the Democrats who say there’s no need to put such a matter on the ballot for the people to decide. One has to wonder why. Isn’t it the Democrats who loudly and continually tell us that the people overwhelmingly support abortion on demand? Isn’t it the Democrats who proclaim themselves the champions of choice? Isn’t it the Democrats who are first to rush to the microphones and reporters with charges of voters being disenfranchised? Yes. It is.

But when it comes to actually having to support such a concept as opposed to merely talking about it, it is also the Democrats who are saying one thing and doing another. It is the Democrats who won’t allow the people to actually have a say on abortion. It is the Democrats that refuse to allow the people to choose. It is the Democrats who sit in Committee and refuse to speak when the voters of Tennessee are disenfranchised. It’s the way they want it.

Tennessee House members Lois DeBerry, Joanne Favors, Sherry Jones, Mary Pruitt, Jeanne Richardson – all Democrats, along with the chair of the full Health and Human Resources Committee Joe Armstrong, also a Democrat – all voted to deny Tennesseans the ability to exercise their right to govern themselves via the vote. It’s six against six million!

Once again I find myself wondering why so many good people with solid values continue to support the Democratic Party when the Party repudiates everything they stand for time and time again. I think it’s time for those folks to rethink supporting Democrats. I think it’s time for Tennessee to be governed by Tennesseans and not by out of touch, out of the mainstream Democrats who don’t even understand enough about our government to know that it’s government of, by and for “the people”, not “the powerful”. Email or call these Representatives. Let them know you’ll be thinking of their vote as you cast your vote in November! At least the Democrats haven’t found a way to take that vote away from you … yet …

Virginians for Fred Thompson: George Allen, baby

without comments

Ah, my affection for the Old Dominion. Not a very well kept secret. My endorsement of Fred Thompson, no secret at all. My affection for tall, gentlemanly, Southern pols that advocate federalism? I think there’s a billboard near the Ryman…

What happens when my two favorite guys, from my two favorite states get together? Hopefully, electoral magic. In the meantime- the Virginians for Fred Thompson folks hosted a live blog with one-half of the magic duo.

Former Governor George Allen, along with Virginia’s up and comer AG Bob McDonnell, took questions about Fred Thompson and his campaign for the presidency. If there is one thing George Allen is phenomenal at – it’s retail politicking. He works the crowd better than most and is an all-around good guy. His return to the forefront of Republican politics is a darn good thing. I know there are critics out there – but – he’s a good man. And he knows his way around the Constitution. I’m just glad there are a few federalists left.

For the record, I submitted a question – Governor Allen answered. The exchange is below. Funny how some things come full circle, just when you least expect it.

Question:Senator Allen:

Certainly, your advocacy of common sense Jeffersonian values, improved Virginia – and inspired Republicans across the Commonwealth, and the nation. The strong economic positions, and policies, you believe in are needed at a federal level.

How do you envision a President Thompson working with the US Congress to restrain out of control spending? And is there any hope of the Congress ever fulfilling their Constitutional mandate of 14 annual bills?

I’ll avoid asking the VP question here… but it’s a suggestion I am hearing among friends in California and elsewhere. Thank you so much for your continued service to the cause of our freedom, security and our future. Senator Thompson is lucky to have you on board.

Elizabeth Blackney

Answer: Governor Allen: Fred Thompson has a proven record of supporting the President having line item veto authority to knock out wasteful pork barrel spending, which is apparently different than some of the other candidates on our side. Fred supports a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced federal budget. These are the same authorities that are provided to well over 40 Governors and states. Fred’s #1 priority is national defense by strengthening our military, modernizing our armed forces, and providing better benefits to those who serve.

Fred believes that raising taxes would be harmful to the prosperity of our country and therefore would want to make recent tax cuts permanent.

Today’s Political Quickie: Iraq and the GOP

with one comment

Alrighty folks. It’s time for a serious Political IED. Streaming live today at Noon Pacific / 3 PM Eastern – The Media Lizzy Show will be off the hook. It’s time to talk about the Iraq War debate in a real way – not just the Senators but the perceptions of the Republican Ground Troops – the College Republicans. If you know about Max Blumenthal, then you know have a hint where I am going with this. I will also look at the latest poll numbers for the President & the increasingly Anti-War Congress. If you’re a Republican, If you are a Conservative – stand by for lightning. If you’re a Democrat or a Liberal, hold on to your seat.

Politricks is just politics, with a finale.

Monday – Streaming Live on BTR – The Media Lizzy Show

without comments

Greetings everyone… I’ve just completed my show notes for the show. Ouch! The word for the day: POLITRICKS. It could just as easily have been PASSION. Fresh from the Sunday talk show watch-fest – I will take apart the big lies. Iraq. The War on Terror. 2008 – polls & campaign cash. The Scooter Libby commutation versus pardon debacle. Gitmo. Republicans and Democrats gathering in tightly woven circles. One question I have… are they going to play rival games of Duck, Duck, Goose or is everyone packing political heat – with itchy trigger fingers???

There is the obligatory mention of Live Earth. Oy.

And then – I will address the growing interest in Jeri Kehn Thompson. She is a lovely spokesperson for Generation X. We’re sick and tired of angry, unhappy Baby Boomers – thankfully, Fred Thompson (who’s 64, Mrs. Thompson recently turned 40! – congrats, girl!) decided his last marriage needed to be happier than the first… rather than his sense of gentlemanly obligation, it was love – companionship – and intellectual banter that won the day…

Generation X women aren’t angry about housework, or husbands… we don’t see ourselves caught up in some Peter Lawford patio drama. We’re happy, confident people. You would think Baby Boomers would be thrilled to know – they raised us to be outspoken, self sufficient, and unafraid of the competition. And… I’ll discuss a brewing firestorm surrounding Sara Taylor. If you don’t know who she is — this little ditty from the Associated Press is sure to light a fire, one way – or another. Subpoena Dispute Builds Around White House Aide

In any case… the show will be unforgettable. Where Smart is bringing Sexy Back… The Media Lizzy Show – streaming LIVE at BlogTalkRadio – 12 Noon Pacific / 3 PM Eastern on MONDAY – July 9th!!!!

Join me! Call in with your questions, Opinions & political IEDs!!! (646) 652-2565

Iraq War Funding Deal

with one comment

Via The Politico:

Congress nears a deal on Iraq war funding which does not include a timeline for
withdrawing the troops. The proposal by Sen. John Warner (R-Va.) would
require President Bush and other key figures to submit progress reports in
order to guarantee economic aid to Iraq. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid
(D-Nev.) says he opposes the deal, but says he will stand by a promise to
send the White House a proposal by Memorial Day.

It is about time Democrats realized you can’t cut war funding AND be for the troops. It simply is not possible.

Note to Hillary: Military folks remember that your husband cut military personnel by 15% – we remember that in 1995 the DoD didn’t buy a single tax – we remember that your hubby’s DoD budgets guaranteed that by 2005 – most Humvees would be older then the average age of soldiers driving them. And since you’re touting your time as “First Spouse” (cause you’re no Lady) as “experience” – it’s worth remembering the facts.

I SUPPORT RED STATE

without comments

Erick Erickson is right. I support the Republican Party. But it is time to get real, clean house, and move forward. We deserve better. America deserves better.

FAIR
WARNING TO THE HOUSE GOP STEERING CMTE. WE WILL NOT YIELD.

There have been some over these last few days who have objected to this war of mine. Some think it needed, but object to calling it a war. Some object to fighting it at all. But this is a war. And it is a just war. It is a war for the heart and soul of the Republican Party. My party. Your party. The party that, had it not lost its way, would not now be having to defend our troops from a position of weakness against a Democrat majority intent on surrender in the War on Terror. This is a war worth fighting.

This war is not about Ken Calvert. The people of his district elected him and he has every right to represent them. He should not, however, be on the Appropriations Committee. Already on the Appropriations Committee — that committee which doles out taxpayer funds — Republicans have seen Duke Cunningham go to jail, John Doolittle resign because of a federal investigation, and Jerry Lewis most likely to soon be indicted. Calvert is just the most recent unfortunate example of why this war is necessary.

This war was not originally about the House Republican Steering Committee, though it has now come to that. They are now the targets. They are the leaders who continue to ignore the message the voters and their base sent them in November. The list includes J. Dennis Hastert , who presided over a House that defended William Jefferson when the FBI sought evidence of his bribery and corruption. It includes Jerry Lewis, who, it appears, will soon to be indicted for corruption. They are Don Young, who has fought for a bridge to nowhere, despite clear voter disgust. And it includes John Boehner , who, when placed in the minority by the voters, declared it not good enough to just deny plum positions to indicted congressman, but that they “should expect more from each other.” They have not practiced what they preached.

Praise be there are rational folks left in the party. Just because Calvert (Foley/Hastert/DeLay) is a part of the establishment, does not mean they are always right, or entitled. BOOT EM OUT.

21st Century War Profiteers: Jessica Lynch & the Tillman Family

without comments

Folks on the Left, Democrats, Code Pink peeps, and the MoveOn.org donors have really had a field day. For weeks, they have been congratulating themselves on uncovering the “truth” about Pentagon propaganda. And I’ll give them props, they at least figured out Cindy Sheehan is just NOT the right kind of spokesperson to persuade the masses. During the late 1960s & early 1970s, their main man was a young guy – just back from Vietnam. His name was John Kerry. He testified before the US Senate. His testimony is legendary. He found his way to fame, and a dead Republican Senator’s fortune, because he was anti-war. He was a war profiteer.

The anti-war folks in the United States Congress may have new names but, their agenda is still alive and well. They oppose fighting the war against Islamic Extremism. They are much more savvy so they sought out a more palatable, popular face. They turned to the family of Pat Tillman, a reportedly good guy who left the NFL to serve our nation. He made his decision – a decision his brother Kevin supported by joining with him – in the wake of the Al Qaeda’s horrific attacks on September 11, 2001. Pat Tillman died in Afghanistan. Initial reports indicated he was in a firefight with the enemy but, subsequently – and far too late – it was learned he died as the result of friendly fire. Fratricide. The death is still honorable.

The Tillman family has a distinct advantage over the average soldier. Wealth. Fame. Well-advertised political opposition to President Bush, the war on Terror, the war in Iraq, and all things faith-based. While I agree they deserve real answers about the circumstances surrounding the death of their loved one, they do not speak for the majority of troops. They do not speak for every Gold Star family. And while they may believe their efforts are courageous, they scarcely understand the ins and outs of the Casualty Assistance programs. They are wealthy, and famous. And therefore – they get to hang out on Capitol Hill, surrounded by political allies. They may not like the answers. But they have them nonetheless.

Despite Kevin Tillman’s mention of a few families also in need of answers… I fail to see the Tillman Family Crusade acting to get “answers” for the families with a service record that has been classified. They aren’t advocating for “clarification” on the hundreds of death certificates issued to the next of kin that are designated “unwitnessed event.” I haven’t seen a public outcry from Congressman Waxman, whereupon he begs the Tillman Family – with all their political & military expertise – to provide direction on what the United States Congress might to to satisfy them. I understand their catastrophic grief, all too well. No one wants a Gold Star and a piece of paper with the word DECEASED next to their loved one’s name.

If Pat Tillman’s mother, Mary, had not made a specific point of attacking Don Rumsfeld during her testimony, her arguments would appear more genuine. Her claims that since Rumsfeld wrote Pat a letter translates into he (Rummy) should have been told of her son’s death – is ludicrous. Once Pat received the letter, it was – welcome to the Army. Your wish has been granted, you are now just like everyone else. The Army should not give a damn if you were famous. They are in the business of war. Not making Mommy feel good. Pat Tillman was a grown man who made, quite successfully, his own choices. The details are not what makes him a hero. He was born a hero and that should be enough. Not every mother gives birth to someone so unique.

War is too often a bloody, horrific, series of tragedies and moments of pure heroism. However, because it is so hard to take emotionally does not mean it is not worth fighting. Heroes are born, not made. Some heroes die. Some come home. These are the folks with the greatest burden. To tell the truth, to live an honorable and thankful life. The burden to serve can not be laid down.

Which brings me to Jessica Lynch. Am I saying she is not an honorable person? Yes. That is exactly what I am saying. The Army bears responsibility as well, though not for the reasons you may think. Jessica Lynch should NEVER have been allowed to place a fingernail on the battlefield. The Army should have kept her behind a desk. The culture of political correctness has run amok. I will never believe that Jessica Lynch was qualified to participate in a supply convoy. Unless and until a soldier can: break down & clean a weapon blindfolded, load & reload ammunition by instinct, be physically capable of carrying another soldier to safety, and possess intrinsic mental toughness, that soldier should NEVER be allowed to deploy.

It is hard to keep all of her various stories straight. For a long time we were told she did not remember anything. I wish the Army had told us the truth as well. They chose to not humiliate her. Then we were told she only remembered a poignant story about stating “I am an American Soldier too.” Maybe Toby Keith should be paying her royalties.

Miraculously, Jessica Lynch remembered just enough to ink a $1 million book deal, accept a free house, start her own foundation and as evidenced from her recent appearance before the US Congress – she now regularly visits the John Edwards Ultra-Expensive Salon for Anti-War Spokespeople. She’s a long way from her humble roots now. Oddly enough, African American POW Shoshana Jonson learned that her book deal was a no-go. Because she wasn’t willing to sex-it-up, as Jessica Lynch did.

I support the efforts to encourage more transparency in governance. The US government should know that in today’s 24/7, YouTube, LittleGreenFootballs-taking-down-Dan-Rather world, the truth will find it’s way out.

Disingenuous war profiteering by Jessica Lynch and the Tillman family are just as wrong. These folks are the 21st Century John Kerry. Where the Tillman family gets a pass is that their efforts clearly stem from grief and a deep ideological well and opposition to President Bush. Just as many families who had a loved one die on Bill Clinton’s watch hold him personally responsible.

Jessica Lynch was complicit with every misstep in the interest of her own financial gain. There is no excuse. Many families yearn for answers. Those answers won’t come…because the average person will never be in the shoes of a hero. Even if you stand next to one.
