Twas not a thousand ships that set sail… instead, it was one thousand attacks. (at least) The similarities end there… The petty jealousies, the judgement of Jeri Kehn Thompson – assumptions about manufactured beauty – and the venal attacks declaring her a “trophy wife” were played out in abundance. I fear such nastiness has just begun.

After reviewing all the comments here on several recent posts about Fred & Jeri Thompson, I was astonished at a few things. Let’s take them one by one…

Trophy Wife: This attack is particularly ridiculous, as I really doubt any one who hurls such charges actually knows Mr. or Mrs. Thompson. It assumes Fred Thompson could not possibly be in love with her, that he views her as property, and that she is an empty-headed beauty. WRONG. Jeri Kehn Thompson, in reality, is an accomplished career woman who made responsible choices and also happens to be a natural beauty. What man would not want a self-sufficient stunner who loves him????

Superficial Beauty: For Goodness’ Sake. Look at her… such beauty isn’t manufactured – DC is a different place but it is not Stepford. There is no rule that says the First Lady must be some dried up post-menopausal woman. (You know, like Bill & Hill.)

She Is Weird Because She Married An Older Man: At the risk of repeating myself… some fellas in their 30s and 40s, especially inside the Beltway, view their accomplished and beautiful colleagues as competition. I’ll just bet she’s heard more than a few derogatory comments. Not all, but many older guys – like Fred Thompson – are respectful, treat women with respect, understand romance and are infinitely more interesting than a guy who still hangs with his buddies and tells attractive colleagues, “Nice Slopes.”

My point was made all too well yesterday. Former Congressman and MSNBC host Joe Scarborough asked a question of Congressional Quarterly‘s Craig Crawford (the video is below – Hat Tip: HOT AIR) that made me violently nauseated. “Do you think she works the pole?” – Scarborough is a Republican. He is an embarrassment. It was repugnant and degrading towards Jeri Kehn Thompson and her husband. Scarborough’s verbal diarrhea perfectly encapsulates why smart, beautiful women often turn to a man more secure, more seasoned, and more appreciative.

Here’s the transcript: (H/T Palmetto Scoop)

SCARBOROUGH: Have you seen Fred Thompson’s wife?
CRAWFORD: Oh, yeah.
SCARBOROUGH: You think she thinks she works the pole?
CRAWFORD: That’s what a Hollywood career will do for you, I

SCARBOROUGH: What do you mean?
CRAWFORD: You get wives like that.

SCARBOROUGH: I mean, look at that guy. God bless him, I love his voice.
But I mean, you know. He ain’t Robert Redford in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance

CRAWFORD: Well I would like to see him back into politics because I
think he’s a lousy actor.

Domestic political machinations should never trump substance. Arrogant men who have no hope of ever being anything other than a two-bit former Congressman should no longer be surprised when they end up on the outside looking in. Scarborough is certainly entitled to his opinion – but he’s no Robert Redford either. At least now, we know just what turns Joe’s little crank. A cowboy. Wasn’t there a movie about that???

Ultimately, such voices will fall on deaf ears. I have long said authenticity will be the word defining the 2008 election. Fred Thompson is so authentic, so earthy, so masculine and virile… he’s damn near a food group. Americans will eat it up.
