In Virginia, where electoral politics is almost a birthright, 2008 is going to be a critical year. The Republican Party of Virginia has decided to choose their US Senate nominee, for the seat being vacated by John Warner, in a convention next June.

Currently, there are polls showing former Governor Jim Gilmore leading Congressman Tom Davis by double digits. Both men trail Mark Warner (no relation to John) by a very significant margin. I know folks in both camps. Both men would make a fine US Senator.

There seems to be some dissatisfaction with the field – even though conservatives have a champion in Gilmore. And moderates have a champion in Davis. (Not to mention Davis has already raised more than $1 million) And so they have turned to retired Marine General Peter Pace, the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.

Today, they launched a website encouraging him to run. It is worth careful consideration. And if he runs, he’ll have my endorsement.

ONE LAST MISSION
