This won’t quell speculation on the Obama Veepstakes… per Politico: Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Joe Biden (D-DE) is headed to Tbilisi, Georgia for meetings with President Mikheil Saakashvili  and other senior diplomats, as well as Georgian citizens displaced by the conflict.

The statement from his US Senate office:

BIDEN to Visit Georgia

Washington, DC – Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Joseph R. Biden, Jr. (D-DE) is scheduled to visit the Republic of Georgia this weekend at the request of President Saakashvili. While in country, Chairman Biden will meet with President Saakashvili, the Georgian Prime Minister Lado Gurgenidze, the U.S. Ambassador to Georgia John Tefft and Georgians who have been forced to flee their homes.

“I am going to Georgia this weekend to get the facts first-hand and to show my support for Georgia’s people and its democratically-elected government,” said Chairman Biden. “I look forward to reporting to my colleagues in the Senate and on the Foreign Relations Committee, as well as the Administration, about what I learn.”

With little more than a week to go before the Democratic National Convention, presumptive nominee Barack Obama must announce his selection for running mate.  The crisis between Georgia and Russia only increases the pressure to ‘get it right.’  And the scrutiny will be intense.  It always is.

Does the Biden trip foreshadow a briefing with Obama on the situation, a la Condi in Crawford?  Or is it simply Biden being Biden?  If Obama chooses Biden… will Biden be seen as the Democratic Cheney?  Or will it be a choice that comforts moderate Democrats and Independents?

If Obama chooses Joe Biden – it may be the first choice he honestly makes in the best interest of our nation.  But given his record of yielding to critics, he may just be the candidate who cried wolf.
